Power Your Body With Good Food @ Powerplant Superfood Cafe In LA

What's the good thing about being put on a special diet? Nothing!!! Except that you have a chance to get creative and tread off the beaten path with your food choices, for a while. I chanced by Powerplant during one of my Lyft rides and I am so glad I decided to double-back here for lunch. This small vegan cafe centers its philosophy on making healthy food delicious again, from the gluten-free pancakes to the superfood sandwiches. They also have a refreshing positive attitude that is sadly absent from a lot of similar restaurants in LA, and make you feel quite welcome from the moment you walk in.

The menu is impressively-large, featuring all sorts of the good stuff, and very little, if any, of the bad. Soy, I'm talking about you! The closest thing they have is tempeh, which is slightly-healthier and less processed as it's made by natural culturing. Most of their items are also gluten-free in case there are any intolerants out there. You have your choice of superfood soups, salads, smoothies, lattes, cold-pressed juices, toast, sandwiches, burgers, and even desserts like hand-churned vegan ice cream. I hear the mocha flavor is to die for.

My eye was drawn to the sweet stuff right away, (those Coconut Banana Pancakes and Vegan French Toast sound amazing); but seeing as I'm trying to be good to my body, I opted for their Yogi Latte made with turmeric, ginger, and chai spice mix instead of their delicious organic coffee. It wasn't nearly as good as coffee, but as far as health drinks go, you could do worse; it's very well-balanced by that chai spice mix and the coconut sugar lends it a pleasant sweetness. I've just never been a fan of turmeric.

For my main meal, I went with their Vegan Pesto Burger made with a double-decker nut-based patty, cilantro/ walnut pesto, grilled mushrooms, fresh lettuce, tomato, and pesto aioli. The burger itself is a little dense and you will definitely need something to wash it down, but overall, the flavor was pretty darn good; slightly-nutty, yet with a nice balance from that cilantro and avocado. It comes at you in layers, and just may be the best vegan patty you've ever tasted. You also have your choice of sides from black beans to side salads.

I lied about not getting anything sweet. For the road, I ordered their Coconut Banana Vegan Pancakes with pickled blueberry sauce and served with a side of their house-made tempeh bacon. The pancakes are amazing as far as vegan pancakes go. Perfectly-sweet, and complimented so well by that tart pickled blueberry sauce. Though the tempeh bacon tends to taste like salty cardboard after a while. If that sounds too sweet for you, they also have a savory pancake version called the 'Brunch Taco Pancake.' I will leave that one up to your imagination.

Is this place worth the price? Definitely. Especially if your health really is at the top of your list. The food options, overall, are tasty, but you're also paying for the responsible nature in which they are served. I would try it at least once. And if you're already into healthy eating and clean living, this joint has your name written all over it!
