As it’s finally summertime, that means that it’s finally grilling season, so what are you waiting for? Dust off those grills, clean up those tongues, grab the condiments, and let’s get cooking some delicious barbeque food. While there are plenty of foods that go exceptionally well on a BBQ, you can’t deny that it is the burger that many consider to be the grand-daddy of all BBQ foods. For many, the burger is synonymous with the BBQ, but we can offer so much more than a charred lump of meat and a plastic-looking piece of processed cheese sandwiched between two pieces of stale bread. To help you celebrate all that the wonderful burger has to offer, here are six fascinating facts for you to mull over.
The word ‘burger’ is actually an abbreviation of ‘hamburger’. Now, you’re probably thinking ‘burgers are made of beef, so why are they called HAM-burgers’? Well, the reason for this is simply due to the fact that the burger was introduced to the US by German Immigrants who came over from Hamburg. The burger we know and love today is based upon Hamburg steaks. The abbreviation of burger from Hamburger was first used 1939, at least, that’s what the Oxford English Dictionary says.
Now, burgers are enjoyed all over the globe, but in the USA, they really love their burgers. Each year, they consume more than 50 billion burgers in the USA. That’s a lot of beef and a lot of bread!
Back in 1982, the world’s largest ever hamburger was created. People travelled far and wide to sample this mammoth burger, and it didn’t disappoint. The burger easily fed more than 10,000 people, with plenty left to spare. So just how big was it? Well, it weighed a whopping 3,591 pounds. That’s roughly the same weight as an average-sized car! You’d need a lot of cheese for that burger.
You’ve heard of this little burger joint called McDonald’s right? Of course you have. McDonald’s currently hold the record for the most burgers ever sold, which currently stands at more than 300 Billion burgers! That’s right, we did say billion. To give you an idea of how many burgers McDonald’s get through, the fast-food outlet sells more than 75 burgers every single second.
During the First World War, American Soldiers referred to hamburgers as ‘Liberty Sandwiches’. This was because they wanted to avoid using German names, or German-sounding names for their foods.
Nope, we’re not making this up. As you probably know, PETA is an organization of animal rights activists that have a reputation for being pretty, shall we say, extreme at times. Well, once upon a time, the organization offered to pay the city of Hamburg, NY, $15,000 to change its name. They wanted the city to change its name from Hamburg to Veggieburg, and no, we’re really not joking.
