Tomatoes from Nigeria, rice from China, pineapples from Brazil, … These are just a few of the products we eat through the whole year that aren’t local. Of course, it’s nice to have a piece of exotic fruit in the winter, but is it worth the effort? The answer is no; I’m sure I’m not the only one who has this opinion, and I’ll tell you why we better eat more local products.

To start is getting our products imported from other continents throughout the whole year bad for the environment. Also, in the most cases people must work in bad circumstances just to get us some fruit or vegetables we can’t grow ourselves in the winter. That’s exactly why I think everybody must start enjoying the products that are produced in our own region. It’s delicious, fair, and better for the environment! There are plenty of reasons why to eat those products, and here I have some of them summed up: 

I know we all want to eat strawberries all year round, but it’s so much better to buy them in the summer from a local grower. These are full of flavor and are better than the ones that have traveled thousands of miles and that were picked before they were ripe.

Local food supports the local economy. The money that is spent with local farmers and growers all stays close to home and is reinvested with businesses and services in your community. This way you support the local farmers so they can give you delicious products in return, and this every year again!

The local products aren’t full of pesticides and other chemical products. Also, you know where your food came from and it is probably produced in better work circumstances. And be honest, who wouldn’t prefer to buy products that are produced reliable environment?

These are some of the reasons why I think we all must see where our food comes from and accept that we can’t always get what we want. And if you like your imported pineapples or strawberries in the winter, be a little crazy and try something that has effect on our environment!
