Birthdays are an important and special occasion in each and every person's life whether they are turning 10 or 50....
For many of us, the humble sandwich is a staple culinary classic in every day life. Although records vary, it is generally believed that we can thank a certain John Montagu (or rather, his cook) the 4th Earl of Sandwich for coming up with this amazing and versatile food stuff that goes with seemingly everything. The story goes that back in 1762, the Earl of Sandwich (yes, there is a place in the UK called Sandwich) was taking part in a marathon 24-hour gambling session. Old John was said to be a big fan of gambling, and as he didn’t want to miss out on a single second of his game, he instructed his chef to prepare him some food that he could enjoy at the gaming table. His chef took two slices of white bread, toasted them, and placed cold luncheon meat between the slices. The earl loved this delicious snack, and soon word spread about this simple and ingenious culinary hack, and the humble sandwich was born. While many of you will enjoy classics like cheese and onion, tuna mayo, BLT, and so on, the fillings we are going to look at are unusual, yet strangely delicious.
It’s only fitting, that as the sandwich was invented in the UK, the first filling we look at should also be quintessentially British. As far as fillings go, you don’t get more British than strawberries and cream. In the UK, every June and July, we get down tonnes and tonnes of fresh strawberries. Typically they are enjoyed with fresh cream. They aren’t however, normally enjoyed in sandwich form, but just you wait until you hear about this. Normally served with thick sliced brioche bread, liberal amounts of Cornish clotted cream are spread on one side of the bread instead of butter. Next, fresh strawberries are sliced, sprinkled with sugar, and splodged generously on top of the thick Cornish clotted cream. Delicious.
This next filling isn’t as strange as it may have seemed a few years back, as people are actually discovering how delicious it really is. We all know and love a good grilled cheese sandwich, but this Mac and Cheese sandwich takes things to a whole new level. Fresh white bread is taken, buttered on both sides, and is topped with a hearty portion of prepared Mac and Cheese. The sandwich is then squashed together, and is gently fried in a hot skilled in butter, until the bread is crispy and golden and the cheese is soft, gooey, and piping hot.
While this next sandwich may sound as healthy as being hit by a bus, it sure doesn’t make it any less delicious. Here, a fresh floured bread bun is taken, buttered, layered with sliced iceberg lettuce, before being topped with a slice of boneless fried chicken, Cheetos, and tomato ketchup. Most people opt for the flaming hot Cheetos, though we have it on good authority that original recipe Cheetos work just as well.
Yep, you are reading that right, there really is a pie sandwich out there, and it is amazing. For those of you that are craving carbs, or just want something stodgy, calorific, comforting, and filling, a pie sandwich is perfect. Basically, you simply take a small cooked pie of your choosing, generously butter two slices of bread, and sandwich the pie between them and enjoy. Some choose to top the pie with gravy, or mushy peas, or both, but that would be a matter of personal preference.
